The following is my heartfelt defence of adult entertainer Bonnie Blue that I felt compelled to write in a moment of passionate sympathy. I’m a little embarrassed about showing my feelings so plainly, but indeed I must overcome the internalized emotional repression that holds me back from embracing the revolution in my own heart, so I will leave it here:

mansplaining about Social Reproduction Theory because absolutely no one asked

So I’ve heard of Bonnie Blue before, but I’ve never taken a closer interest as my feed tends to come from the thicker end of the algorithm, until today when I saw a new video from Jimmy the Giant, a UK political economy youtuber who I watch. Jimmy says that pornstar Bonnie Blue has united the political spectrum in condemnation of her provocative sexual behaviour and associated online fame, but I do not condemn her or any of her actions that have come to my attention and I daresay I am happy for her and wish her all the best.

And because no one asked, I’m going to explain why, and I’m writing this off the cuff, impulsively or compulsively as the best mansplaining always is, so please forgive my grammar.

I’m no expert, but I’ve been known to enjoy the services of sex workers myself, and perhaps more importantly I’ve been studying economics with a focus on making real analyses of essential logistics, and it’s led me to a set of ideas called Social Reproduction Theory. It is a theory that builds on scientific marxist analysis of the forces of production. Where marxist analysis examine the capitalist who owns the means of production and buys labour, and the worker who sells their labour to produce something, and the consumer who buys it, Social Reproduction Theory examines the question of where these people come from in the first place and the economic forces involved in sustaining human life.

We all start somewhere and that somewhere is inside a woman. Every one of us starts life as the embodiment of surplus value a woman has yielded to collective humanity and in order to survive and grow we need certain inputs. Food, water, shelter, clothing, these are all things that we produce or procure industrially through collective effort, men and women alike, but other inputs, like health care, child care and early education, indeed all education both academic and social, more often come from women, and are more often unpaid.

That’s the keyword: unpaid

While industrial and mercantile labourers are insufficiently compensated for thier surplus value in order for the capitalist to have profits, the labour of social reproduction is too often wholly uncompensated, and even institutional educators and carers are chronically underpaid and undervalued by conventional economic analysis.

The work women do is too often unappreciated and thus remains too often unpaid, and the women themselves unfulfilled, alienated from the fruits of their labour even more atrociously than the working man.

Social Reproduction Theory explains all of this way better than I can in an afternoon. It explains how so many of our system failures like falling birth rates and health crises stem from this issue of undervalued social labour.

Including sex, the emotional labour, the physical risks involved, all expected for free to keep the system going, with women continuing to be punished and stigmatized for even asking for compensation. In case you haven’t heard, Bonnie Blue is widely criticized for having many sexual partners and selling videos of her intimate activities with them on the internet, often entertaining many suitors consecutively or simultaneously. Indeed, she has recently announced her pregnancy, resulting from the same essential economic inputs as all pregnancies.

According to Jimmy’s video, it is said by progressives that her attaining fame and fortune from her spectacular exhibitionism is a symptom of capitalism run amok and the commodification of every aspect of life. And of course more conservative thinkers would find her revelling in promiscuity to be unwholesome or sinful.

Both the left and right are said to agree that what she does sets a bad example and is indicative of some societal decline.

But I daresay both groups are missing something, something so big I felt I had to write this stream of consciousness nonsense for hopefully no one to ever read (certainly no woman should’ve read this far without irony).

Bonnie Blue is not really doing anything different than countless, actual millions of women around the world do all the time, often with far less compensation or control of their own affairs.

How many millions of sex workers and billions of wholly unpaid wives and girlfriends become pregnant every year, every week, every minute?

And how many of them can say, like Bonnie Blue can, that all her heavily screened and carefully selected lovers are on kept file, tested for all infection, and indeed, freshly bathed, as Bonnie insists all her suitors be.

I daresay that the thing both progressives and conservatives fear and recoil from is not Bonnie’s sex life or resulting fame.

The example she sets as a sex worker is good actually when you consider the care she shows in preparation and the responsibility she takes for her actions.

Indeed the thing that people fear and turn away from is recognizing the awful truth of how sex workers and really all women are treated around the world with respect to the surplus value they yield every day.

Whether you are a progressive who thinks that Bonnie is just a symptom of economic decline or a conservative who sees only moral decline, I ask you what has she really done wrong?

In a world where the numbers are down for socializing and sexual intercourse, she is still fucking and taking names.

In a world were birth rates are down, she is pregnant.

God bless her, she’s pregnant.

As a single parent myself I wish her the best of luck.

And for anyone who thinks she should be married first or at least have a baby with a steady provider so she doesn’t have to work anymore, I recommend you check the bibliography for links.

She was married before and tried everything have a baby, and that life was unfulfilling for her. Now she has money, she travels, she has a chance at growing a family. She has what she wants personally and that is what every woman deserves. I wish her all the best in her new life and all her future endeavours and I think you should too if you read this far.
